In this writing class, students will be given the chance to explore various forms of creative writing, including (but not limited to) short stories, personal essays, and poetry. Through these forms, we will develop students’ understanding of story elements (e.g. plot, characters, theme) and literary devices (e.g. personification, hyperbole). While some time will be spent on grammar and punctuation, this class will focus more on helping them write original, thoughtful, and inventive work. The reason for this is twofold. First, creativity and depth of thought become increasingly important as children progress through their schooling and through their lives as well, but often these are neglected in the typical English curriculum. Second, when students understand that writing is a powerful tool for self-expression, they write more. Writing more is the only way writing improves.
As part of the course, students will also receive one-on-one feedback on their work.
